Paper Description

Edit Paper Description Content

This paper is an intensive ‘catch-up’ paper in basic algebraic concepts with a brief introduction to calculus and statistics. It is intended for those students who wish to improve their basic mathematical skills, either as a background for other subjects, or prior to enrolling in MATH165, MATH166 (BBA students), STAT111, or STAT121 in a subsequent semester or year.

NOTE: If you are studying MATH168 as preparation for any higher-level Mathematics paper you will need to aim for at least a B- grade.

This paper attempts to cover the minimum background skills needed for such papers. These include all algebra skills from Year 9 to Year 12 Mathematics.

It is an applications paper and stresses use of mathematics in a ‘real-world’ context.

Assessment

Edit Assessments Content

The paper consists of SIX modules, each of which will take two weeks. The content of each module is given in the "Topics" section of this paper outline.

Near the front of the Workbook are lists of the recommended work for each module. This recommended work consists of problems from the Workbook itself. The problems from the list for each particular module will be set as assigned work to be completed by Friday of the second week of the module.

Write your answers to the assigned work in PEN (not pencil - this will not be marked) in the Workbook itself. This assigned work must be completed and signed off - only at MATH HELP sessions in G.B.13 by the FRIDAY 2pm deadline (Friday deadline dates shown in the front of the Workbook) but the EARLIER THE BETTER!

LATE Workbooks will NOT be recognised.

The total of the SIX Workbook assignments will count for a total of 10% of your internal assessment mark.

There will be SIX tests held fortnightly on Fridays during class time from 2.10pm - 3.40pm in L.G.01 on the following dates:

Fridays: 9 March, 23 March, 6 April, 4 May, 18 May, 1 June.

The total of all SIX tests will determine the other 40% of your internal assessment mark and will test material covered in the six modules.

Please ensure you have your ID card with you at all the tests.

IMPORTANT: Calculators will be required (any basic scientific calculator, but NO graphics or more advanced calculators). You are strongly advised to purchase a suitable calculator at the beginning of the paper so that you have time to become familiar with it.

Suggested Calculator: “Casio” FX82 … - available from most stationery shops.

Graphics or more advanced calculators will NOT be permitted in Tests OR the Final Examination.

Your final overall mark will consist of 50% Internal assessment plus 50% Final exam. Regardless of this you must score at least 40% in the Final exam to gain a clear pass of C- or higher in the paper.

There will be a Final Exam scheduled by the Assessment and Graduation Office at the end of A semester. Failure to complete the Final Examination will result in an IC grade for the paper.

Restricted pass (RP) will NOT be accepted as a pre-requisite for entry into higher-level Mathematics papers.
